Barbarians Crowned Champions In Both Leagues

DSC_1152Both the senior and junior Barbarians are the new champions of the Tribal League following week 9 of the Central Venue League and the final round of games for this league, as the event now enjoys a break for Easter, ahead of the Club Presentation Evening on Friday 28th April.

The new league will begin the following week and will involve some movement of personnel as certain players are traded between the teams.

In the final week players really stepped up their games with a lot to play for between The Knights and Barbarians in the senior league, and The Goblins and Archers in the junior league.

DSC_1226The Knights were hoping The Barbarians would slip up in one game with both teams chasing the league title, and The Archers almost provided the essential result, losing out in the end by just 4pts, 15-19 in what was a great game. Knights would win all four of their games, but this would only consolidate second place.

Ben Fox was once again unstoppable as he hit 50pts to finish as the leagues top scorer on 612pts, an incredible achievement and 315pts ahead of the runner up.

The Archers have been incredible in recent weeks with excellent team play between Dom Taylor, Max Galloway and Brad Coxon. The return of Jonathan Wetherley in the last two weeks and a superb performance in the final week begs the question – what could have been? – if they had not missed players on certain weeks.

Jonathan WetherleyChris Palmer, of the Barbarians, had one of his best games of the league against the Goblins with 15pts and 2 assists including a number of highlight plays and was a contender for Player of the week along with Dom Taylor and Jonathan Wetherley of The Archers.

Palmer collected 19pts and 3 assists, but was outshone by an impressive 34pts from Taylor and a memorable haul from the eventual Player of the Week; Jonathan Wetherley with 23pts and 11 assists bringing his total contribution to 45pts.

Defensively, there seemed to be a real desire from a number of players this week. Tom Guan, Ammy Atwal, Jacob Watts, Claire Thomson and David Foomeni all worked tirelessly to limit their opposition and set a great example for others watching at the sideline.

Missing players for the Wizards meant the team had to forfeit their games.

Kody DuranceIn the junior league Kody Durance picked up his third Player of the Week award with yet another seemingly effortless display on his way to 48pts and 4 assists. Andrew Halfacre hit 31pts and Charlie McKenna hit 22pts and 2 assists to be in contention for the award.

Durance led the league in both points (265) and assists (41), but it was the ease and selfless play that was most impressive.

The Barbarians were assured of the Championship a number of weeks ago and only lost five games all season, such was the standard of unselfish play delivered at both ends of the court by Kody Durance, Lucy Hodgson, Alex Moran and Jake Fitzgibbon.

Attention was now focused on second place and any of the three teams could have clinched this honour. As it transpired, The Giants had to forfeit three games due to missing players which resulted in them finishing in fourth place and leaving the Goblins and Archers to fight it out with Goblins edging their rivals by just 3pts and only 6pts separating second and fourth place; an indication of how strong the competition has been.

Charlie LawtonIn terms of improvements, there have been great strides of development from many players, especially Charlie Laughton, Joe Blowman, Joseph Stollery, Jake Fitzgibbon and Sean Gibson, and it would appear there is much more to come from everyone.

Awards will be presented in a wide range of categories for the Tribal League at the Club Presentation Evening. Tickets are available for £6 and includes food and entertainment from 7pm (arrive 6.30pm) at the Edge Bar, Stockton Riverside on Friday 28th April.
