About us

Our journey

Established in 2007 by James Thomson who has more than 20 years experience of playing, coaching, developing and promoting basketball, Teesside Lions quickly grew into one of the most dynamic clubs in the country.

In 2011/12 the club were attracting crowds of more than 500 with senior players from the USA and Italy. The club has always punched above its weight and provided a very attractive option to players and fans.

The club changed direction in 2013 with a focus on grass roots development which has led to hundreds of members, the vast majority under 18 who are very committed to the sport. With a superb reputation for developing young players, Teesside Lions attracts new members from all across the North of England.

Fierce ambitions

Following 8 months preparation Teesside Lions launched plans to bring professional basketball to the region and are inviting equally ambitious companies to be part of our journey.

Lions are building a squad to compete and climb the divisions on our way to the televised British Basketball League (BBL). Having already signed some incredible athletes from around the world to compliment a core of young talented home grown players they will represent the area across the UK in the National Basketball League.

The Lions game day event is among the best in UK basketball, featuring music, cheerleaders, half time shows, competitions and much more. Our home is the superb 1,200 capacity Eston Sports Arena which provides the perfect venue for an enjoyable family afternoon of spectator orientated sports action and entertainment.

There is a real desire from members of the club, the community and the business community to bring professional basketball to the area.
