Day has arrived for Teesside

Teesside Lions have made a key signing for their upcoming season by bringing in Will Day, a rising star from Sheffield Elite. The talented guard will not only bring his basketball prowess to Teesside but will also be balancing his athletic career with academic studies at Durham University. Day's versatility, leadership, and determination make him a valuable addition to the Lions as they aim to make an impact in the National Basketball League.

Day's basketball journey has been marked by rapid improvement and impressive accolades. In 2023, he was named Sheffield Elite’s Most Improved Player, showcasing his ability to grow and adapt his game. Just a year later, he was recognized as the Most Valuable Player in the U18 Premier League, reflecting his standout performances across the board. During his final year with Sheffield, Day was made team captain, a role in which he thrived, leading his team with authority and confidence. He averaged an impressive 17 points per game, 7.4 assists, 6.3 rebounds, and 4.5 steals — demonstrating his ability to contribute in multiple areas on the court. His scoring ability, playmaking vision, and defensive tenacity made him one of the most well-rounded players in his league.

Beyond his domestic success, Will Day has also represented Sheffield Elite in prestigious international competitions, including the U20 European Youth League and the U19 Elite Academy Basketball League (EABL). These experiences allowed him to compete at a high level against top European talent, sharpening his skills and improving his understanding of the game. Day's exposure to different styles of play and his experience under pressure make him a mature and capable player, ready to take on the challenges at Teesside Lions.

Day's decision to join Teesside Lions while pursuing his studies at Durham University highlights his dedication to both academics and basketball. The Lions are thrilled to have signed a player of his calibre, who not only brings an impressive skill set but also a strong work ethic and leadership qualities. As he begins his university studies, Day will balance the rigors of academics with his commitment to performing on the court, a challenge he is fully prepared for.

Lions Chief James Thomson believes Lions have signed the ‘ideal’ player, saying: “Following conversations with Will, it was clear he is a highly driven individual who is eager to play his role and earn his chance. This will be crucial as we look to bring in depth to address the issue which hurt us last season.

“It’s difficult to keep a squad happy, but we want players who will buy into the club, play for the name on the front of the jersey as opposed to the back, and rather than complain, simply work harder to earn their place and time.

“When Coach Serge and I discussed our aims this year, team morale and positivity was the top priority. I believe Will’s personality will help foster this philosophy. He is a talented player with many strengths at both ends of the court, but his attitude and willing to go above and beyond will make a difference for him, the team and endear him to the Teesside fans.”

Will echoed this sentiment, adding: “I am really excited to join Teesside. This is a big club with a great fan base. The team is capable of challenging for silverware and I will be ready when called upon.”

Will Day’s addition to the Lions’ roster strengthens their backcourt significantly. His ability to create plays for his teammates, control the tempo of the game, and make an impact defensively will be critical to Teesside’s success. Furthermore, his leadership skills, honed during his captaincy at Sheffield Elite, will be crucial as he steps into a key role with his new team.

With his new chapter at Teesside Lions and Durham University, Will Day is poised for a breakout season. Lions fans can expect to see a dynamic player who brings energy, skill, and leadership to every game. His versatility on the court, combined with his drive to succeed, makes him an exciting prospect for the Lions, and his future in British basketball looks incredibly bright.
